Happy Birthday

So, today is my bf's birthday. It is a long held tradition in my family to go all out on birthdays. For this reason, to commence the day of festivities, I woke up at the crack of dawn to make the boy from-scratch cinnamon rolls. I took great care to exit the bedroom without making a noise and made my way into the kitchen.

I combined together flour, sugar, egg, butter and yeast. I then covered the dough with a bowl for five minutes. I rolled out the dough and covered it with a layer of butter and then sprinkled cinnamon and sugar on top of the butter. Finally, starting with the 10" side, I rolled the dough tightly.

Next, I cut the dough into 12 equal pieces and placed them on a greased pan. I covered the rolls with a towel and placed them on top of my oven to allow them to rise. It took about one hour for the dough to rise fully.

I then placed the rolls in the oven at 375 and cooked them for approximately 25 minutes.

I went out and cut a couple of roses from our garden and placed them in a mason jar. Somehow, some way, I managed to finish the rolls at exactly the time that he needed to wake up for work....phew! Here's what he woke up to.

Check out the recipe after the jump
Cinnamon Rolls

3 cups of flour
1 cup milk
1 egg
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp sugar
1 instant yeast packet

Preheat over to 375. Combine flour and yeast. Mix well. Add egg, butter, milk and sugar to mixture. Once you've reached desired consistency, make the dough into a ball and cover with a bowl for five minutes. Knead dough for five minutes. Roll out dough to 15" x 10" and spread butter and cinnamon/sugar mixture (1/2 cup sugar and 2 tbsp of cinnamon) over the butter. Beginning with the 10" side, roll the dough tightly. Cut the dough into 12 pieces and place them on a greased pan. Cover the rolls with plastic wrap and a towel and let them sit in a warm area (I place mine on top of my stove). Let the rolls rise until they've doubled in size (takes me about 1 hour). Place the cinnamon rolls in the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes depending on oven.

Remove cinnamon rolls and let cool. Drizzle with your choice of icing. I just combine milk, powdered sugar and a dash of vanilla and voila you have delicious from-scratch cinnamon rolls.

  2. OoOh, yummy! I just made cinnamon rolls a few days ago! Yours look better.. I think I didn't separate them in the pan enough to let them rise a second time.
